Understanding Body Shaming

Before you learn how to respond to body shaming, it is important to know what it entails. Anyone can body shame you by making fun of your looks, body type, body shape, body size, and other body features such as your lips, nose, eyes, and hair.

Sometimes people will directly comment on your body features. You may also witness people indirectly insulting you, mocking you, or making judgmental stares or comments.

As an individual, you can experience body shaming at your home, your workplace, in a public place, or through social media. The impact of shaming can be deeply damaging and it can affect your mental and physical well-being. Therefore, recognizing body shaming is the first step towards fighting it.

How to Respond to Body Shaming

You can fight body shaming by adopting social tactics and personal strategies. Combining these two approaches can give you the strength to address the problem.

Sometimes you have to ignore a remark, other times you have to give a shut-up call to the body shamer. Then there will be times when you have to politely convey your feelings to the person in front of you.

1. Stay Calm and Composed

First things first. Staying calm is the first step to responding to body shaming. When you face criticism and get negative comments about your body it’s natural to feel hurt and get angry. However, reacting to such incidents can escalate the situation.

Therefore you should train yourself to remain calm. Try to take a deep breath before responding to comments. Give yourself a moment to think about whether it is worth it. The person body shaming might be doing this to make you look bad. If not then you might respond to the person and tell him or her that comments are hurtful.

2. Assertive Communication

Assertive communication is a communication style in which you share your thoughts in a clear yet direct way. If you face body shaming you can assertively respond to the body shamer by saying;

  • “I don’t respect people commenting about my looks.”
  • “You must be aware that what you say can be hurtful to others, so think before saying.”
  • “I appreciate people who don’t criticize my body.”

This type of communication plays an important role in setting boundaries. You are able to share your feelings and thoughts with respect without being controversial.

3. Be Ignorant

You don’t have to respond to every person, especially if someone is mean to you or passing degrading remarks. Try to adopt the strategy of ignorance. Ignoring body shamers can devalue their comments.

Whereas a silent treatment can steal the attention that body shamers might be looking for. Moreover, your attitude might make them realize their inappropriate behavior. So, you can ignore such situations and people by focusing on your tasks.

4. Block the Negative Vibes

No one in this world has the right to criticize your body and looks. If someone does so, then it’s up to you how you take that. You can either give power to others to make you feel sad and worthless or you can decide to block their negativity.

Keep in mind that when people say something degrading, they are revealing themselves. Such people have a habit of mocking others. Therefore, block their negative vibes by believing in yourself.

You can always leave the company of such people by telling them “goodbye”.

5. Educate and Inform

In your life, you might encounter people who body shame others as if it’s a normal thing. Such people are unaware of how their words are hurtful to others. If you find yourself in such a situation and you feel comfortable then you can always use it as an opportunity to educate them.

You can politely inform them by saying;

  • “ Did you know that your comments can seriously have a negative impact on someone’s mental health.”
  • Or “It’s not a good approach to comment on someone’s appearance. Such actions can be hurtful.”

6. Set Boundaries

You can fight body shaming by establishing boundaries when you encounter a body shamer. You always have the option to distance yourself from people who keep mocking you despite your efforts to stop them.

Always remember that you are empowered to set limits and cut off people who make you feel bad. And if the person is a family member or friend then explain to them how their comments are hurtful.

7. Seek Support

Sometimes people struggle to respond to body shaming. In such a situation you might seek support from family, friends, or even from a professional. Talking about your experience and sharing how you feel can help you to process your emotions.

Such support can be a blessing, it can help you to uplift your courage and fight with impacts of body shaming.

8. Use Humor

Using humor in such situations can be difficult for many people. However, if you feel comfortable and have the courage then adopting this approach can defuse tension. It can also shift the focus of negative comments and help you to regain control of the situation. For instance, you can say that;

  • “Stop being concerned about my food, unless you are paying for it.”
  • “I’m interested in enjoying the moment, you should do that too.”

Responding to body shamers with such comments can lighten the mood.

9. Practice Self-Care

Self-care is another way to respond to body shaming. You can engage yourself in activities that reinforce body positivity and boost your self-esteem. You can take care of yourself by;

  • Eating Healthy: Consume nutritious food to enhance your well-being
  • Doing Exercise: Involve in physical activities that improve your mood and body image
  • Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation: Meditation and mindfulness activities can help you to develop a positive relationship with your body.

Adopting self-care activities increases your confidence and resilience level.

10. Responding to Family and Friends

Dealing with body shaming from family and friends is no different. If you encounter a situation of body shaming you can always share your thoughts with them. Tell them their comments are inappropriate. If you feel like it, you can briefly explain to them how their comments are hurtful.

In other situations, you can also ignore them. Ignorance can make them realize about their acts. There might be some people around you who are kind by nature and are unaware of the consequences of their comments. Such people might need some feedback, in a good way, that informs them about the impact of body shaming.

11. Fighting Online Body Shaming

The rise in the use of social media has also opened ways for people to pass comments on other people’s looks and appearance. Some people use private messages to share negative remarks. While others may use the comment section to body shame you.

Dealing with such people can be easy because you always have the option to block them. You can also delete their comments or reply to them with confidence showing them that their opinion is not important.

Cultivating a Positive Body Image

Responding to body shamers is only one side of the story. You can cultivate a positive body image through self-reflection and self-acceptance. Below are some strategies that you can adopt to build and maintain a positive body image.

1. Challenge Negative Thoughts

No one is perfect in this world. Even top models and actors have some negative thoughts about their bodies. Don’t give yourself a hard time and appreciate the positive looks of your appearance.

For instance, instead of feeling bad for yourself, be thankful for what you have because there are people in this world who are not as blessed as you are in many ways.

2. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

Make sure that you are around people who encourage you and support you for who you are. Positive surroundings are also blessings that help you recognize your worth and make you resilient.

3. Limit Exposure to Negative Media

Before admiring any glamorous personality always remember that their appearance doesn’t support realistic beauty standards. Moreover, such famous people experience tough times and struggle to achieve the body type they have. Plus, it’s their job to maintain a certain body type else they will not get work.

So you can remember the struggle of personalities or you can limit your exposure to unrealistic beauty standards by boycotting them.

4. Focus on Positive Things

Your appearance should not be the center of attention. Instead, you should focus on your functionality and be thankful for your body. This approach will enhance your self-esteem and you will be more than happy for who you are.

5. Engage in Body-Positive Activities

This world is filled with all types of people and if you feel low you can join support groups, body-positive workshops, or events. Engaging with like-minded people will provide you with valuable support and encourage you to body-acceptance.

Concluding Remarks

Everyone should learn how to respond to body shaming. This is an essential life skill that encourages you and enhances self-esteem. There are different strategies that can help you. You can stay calm and adopt an assertive communication style, seek support, and practice self-care.

Moreover, you should cultivate a positive body image by challenging your inner negative thoughts and being around people who have a positive influence on your life.

Be mindful that you are not defined by your body appearance but by your thoughts, character, actions, and the kindness that you show to yourself and towards others.
