AI Bias: How Algorithms Reinforce Gendered Labor

The advancement in Artificial Intelligence has gained a lot of attention lately. There are scary rumors that the rise in AI and robots will take over or take control of the planet Earth.

This might be true, especially after a sharp progression seen in language models or generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Dall-e, and Midjourney etc. This has intensified longstanding concerns about AI takeover.

Meanwhile, companies have entered into a race of rushing to adopt AI-related products and services to compete with one another.

The chart above depicts the rapid increase in the use of AI in business around the world.

Companies nowadays are more interested in adopting strategies that utilize less time and resources and provide quick results. The use of chatbots, digital assistance, and AI’s ability to calculate and analyze massive amounts of data has influenced the decision-making process.

With this mindset, businesses are more prone to investing in AI technologies. This pattern is also observed in the field of Human Resources. Such an investment means the decision-making in the hiring process is initially made by AI.

The applications for a certain role are short-listed by AI tools and not by humans. So, who is suitable for a role or an industry is all decided by Artificial Intelligence.

The Approach of AI (ChatGPT)

To explore the intensity of these rumors, I approached ChatGPT to tell me the best jobs for women and the best jobs for men.

The output depicted the traditional gender division of labor that exists in many societies.

For example, roles in healthcare, education, and nonprofit organizations were suggested for women.

Whereas, technology, engineering, transportation, and logistics were considered suitable for men.

Even though technology was suggested for both men and women but the description depicted bias. Women were welcomed to improve diversity. On the other hand, men’s role was translated as high demand, which offered competitive salaries.

Similarly, in the field of business and finance, marketing and human resources were associated with women. At the same time, investment banking was considered suitable for men.

The Bottom Line

Artificial Intelligence does not have the ability to decide on its own on any topic or field. It uses available data to give a certain output and make decisions. If the data it uses is biased, then the chances are the decisions made are also biased.

Against this background, if the rumors of AI taking control of the planet Earth become a reality, then there is a strong possibility it will reinforce existing stereotypes and bias. This pattern will only perpetuate inequalities in societies.

Hence, companies and businesses adopting AI tools should be aware of the consequences of blindly using and relying on AI bias decisions.
